Q: Someone suggested Google Smart Ads, what are they?

A: An auto generated advertising program.

As the site showing ads:
It's a program where they pay you for click thrus from your site to their advertisers.
You sign up, put their code into your page and they pick the ads that will show on your page.
I don't know of anyone who has made any money from it.
You can't use it in a PDF.
You could use it on your HTML web page.
See: http://www.google.com/ads/ for all the information on the program.

Also note that when you go to a page that is against a smoking ban, you see ads for quit smoking. Readers get upset about that, but you can't control it.
The google server sees the word tobacco or something on your site and automatically puts in ads that have that same word in it's description.
So if the site was about cooking food with a wood smoker, it could be given quit smoking ads instead of cooking ads.
If the ads do not have something to do with your subject, they will not get clicked on by your readers.
A site only about cats would get ads that have to do with cats, and the site owner might make a few bucks a year.

As the site having your ads shown on other pages:
Remember that if your ad is auto generated onto pages that do not pertain to your topic, you won't get a lot of click thrus from it.
